“Higher! Higher!”
Squealed a toddler as he jumped and let go of the kite. His elder brother happily complied. The brightly coloured beauty soared across the sky, bearing testament to their love, encapsulating all the hours spent decorating it together. For a couple more years, atleast, I’d get to remain his hero, he thought. Wiping a tear from his eye, as he recalled similar days spent with his own hero. A loving father, snatched from them too soon.
On the terrace opposite, stood a guy holding his phone up as high as he could. “Can you see the kites? All those shapes and colours? Can you?”
He asked excitedly, staring into the small screen. Thousands of kilometres away, a girl smiled. Knowing full well how he won’t ever accept or express his love for her, but would always call up to share every beautiful thing that catches his eye. He was scared of the distance. He was scared of getting hurt again. Still, she could tell she’s in his thoughts, if not in his heart yet. For now, that was enough.
I look up and see the sky dotted with hundreds of such kites. Each unique, each living to the fullest as it spans the sky, battling to achieve the greatest of heights before dashing back into the ground. I look at them and wonder at all the beauty they contain. I look at them and wonder at all the unsaid hopes, wishes, dreams, thoughts and feelings openly and lovingly displayed amidst their vivid details.
Higher, dear kite, fly higher. Soar above. Your job isn’t done yet.
Beautifully written .. I missed jaipur this year on Makarsakranti 💞💞 keep blogging

Loved your take on the glorious kite festival. Beautifully penned. Also, it reminds me of the times I used to watch kite flying on my grandmothers’ terrace. It was a fun activity for all our cousins, uncles and aunts.

Thank you so much, my love.
I was hoping it would bring back childhood memories for those who can relate. It used to be a beautiful experience, right? And all those kite wars! So intense! Loved every bit of it as a kid. Yesterday, I realised I still do. 💕
