Humpty Dumpty

Every thing

Has

A breaking point

A melting point

A boiling point

A tipping point

Beyond which

Nothing’s ever the same again

It’s all

Remoulded

Reshaped

Revised

And

Reformed

I wonder

When I’d reach

My own point of no return

Would I reap the privilege

Of being

Reborn?

Or

Would I

Be bent so out of shape

Be rendered so brittle

So immalleable

Unpliable

And

Unsalvageable

That I’d be

Beyond all repair?

All my pieces

Every single part

All the little fragments

Every shard of my heart

Would cry out in despair

And I’d smile

Somewhere

In irony

For the child in me

Would finally know

Why

All the king’s horses

And all the king’s men

Couldn’t put

Humpty Dumpty

Together

Again.

Tell me

Would you still come sit with me on the wall?

  1. A very beautifully written poem. It does not rhyme, but it isn’t necessary at all. Poems are just messages. I love its rhythm and flow. The images are powerful with a profundity of thought, philosophical, about the individual’s existence, the changes in life, the forgotten child in us, … “All the little fragments/ Every shard of my heart” (love this). Also, I love the reference to Humpty Bumpty. I am a fan of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass, where that character appears.

    1. Hey, thank you so much! I’ve been a big fan of Alice in Wonderland since I was a little girl. I am so happy that this poem could resonate with you. Through the Looking Glass was indeed what inspired me to choose this image. 🙂

  2. There is a lot of focus on the ‘negative’ aspects of the influence of a change. Then again, Humpty Dumpty is not the most upbeat tale.
